Democrat Jay Chen Gains Momentum In DCCC Battleground Seat

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, CA – Today Representative Mark Takano (CA-33) announced his endorsement of Lt. Commander Jay Chen’s campaign for Congress in California’s 39th Congressional District. Congressman Takano is the third Congressmember in three days to endorse Chen following the nomination of former Democratic incumbent Gil Cisneros to a post in the Biden Administration.

“I am endorsing Lt. Commander Jay Chen because it is more important than ever that we elect representatives who will speak out and take action,” said Representative Takano. “As the Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I know we can use more veterans like Jay in Washington. And as a member of the Education and Labor Committee, I look forward to having another community college trustee and school board member amongst our ranks who will be an advocate for public education. Jay will work to address the learning challenges children are experiencing due to COVID-19 and will always put students first.”

With Rep. Takano’s support, Lt. Commander Jay Chen continues to gain momentum as the only Democrat running for a seat that Republican Young Kim narrowly won by 1% in November. Earlier this month, the campaign announced more than $386,000 cash on hand at the end of quarter one.

“I am deeply encouraged by Rep. Mark Takano’s support,” said Lt. Commander Jay Chen. “I hope to model Congressman Takano’s success as a local community college trustee who made the leap to our nation’s capital to better serve his community.” Chen continued. “These are challenging times and I look forward to working with Representative Takano and members on both sides of the aisle to deliver results for the people of California’s 39th Congressional District.

Representative Takano’s support comes on the heels of public support from Representative Grace Napolitano (CA-32), Representative Ted Lieu (CA-33), California State Controller Betty Yee, Former California State Treasurer John Chiang, Assemblymember David Chiu, Los Angeles County Assessor Jeffrey Prang, and dozens of local electeds.

California’s 39th Congressional District, split between Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino Counties, is one of the most competitive districts in the country. President Joe Biden won the district by an overwhelming ten points and it is currently represented by extreme Republican Young Kim, who won the seat in 2020 with a slim 4109 vote margin.

Jay Chen is a Lt. Commander and intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy. Use of his military rank, job titles, and photographs in uniform does not imply endorsement by the Department of Defense or Department of the Navy.
