RELEASE: Young Kim Exploits Immigrant Children To Cover-Up Extreme Anti-Immigrant Record

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, CA – Today, in response to Young Kim’s op-ed describing her visit to the southern border, Lt Commander Jay Chen released the following statement highlighting Kim’s inconsistency:

“Young Kim is the worst kind of hypocrite. Young Kim’s photo opp at the southern border is exactly what we should come to expect from her: a PR stunt to soften her image while she votes with the most extreme wing of her party in Congress and in the State Assembly. Young Kim voted against DACA while saying she supports DREAMERS and even questioned the legitimacy of news reports of child separation. On the campaign trail, Kim was lock-step with Trump’s immigration policies and her attempts to rewrite history haven’t gone unnoticed.”

Young Kim received criticism in 2018 for not opposing family separation until the day after Trump himself reversed his position. A month later, Kim switched her position again, questioning the legitimacy of news reports of child separation. Saying, “I don’t want to see a crying child, but what’s the real story behind it?”

Kim is also a notorious DACA flip-flopper. Young Kim told KPCC Public Radio that she supported permanent legal status for undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children. However, Kim voted against the DREAM Act earlier this year, without so much as offering an explanation. Additionally, Kim voted against extending state health care benefits to immigrant children and voted against campus resources centers to assist DREAMers.

After bragging in a campaign ad that her family immigrated to the United States legally, “not because we wanted handouts,” Kim was condemned for appealing to Trump’s base in English while quietly assuring the Korean community that she would be good on immigration. Kim then amended the ad for the general election paring back some of the harsher language.

“Young Kim votes exactly as her party bosses request and then weaponizes her immigrant story to avoid accountability,” said Campaign Manager Lindsay Barnes. “Kim cares about immigrant children only when it is convenient, cares about enforcing legality only when it is convenient, and changes her mind so often that I have whiplash,” Barnes continued. “Who is Young Kim, and what does she actually believe in?”
